Counseling Program and Counselor Roles

Comprehensive School Counseling Program:

A comprehensive school counseling program includes components that assist all students in growth and achievement in academic, social, and emotional areas.  It is an organized, systematic way of delivering the counseling components.

The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs includes 4 main components.  Those components include:

Guidance Curriculum: 

Lessons and skills taught in the classroom that assist in the development of student academic, personal, and social growth.

Individual Planning

Meeting with the individual student to develop goals and plans that facilitate personal growth. 

Responsive Services

This includes prevention, remediation, and crisis services.  These services include dealing with difficult situations such as trauma, grief, or distress. 

System Support

This component includes ways the counselor supports the goals and objectives of the school in the areas of academics, personal, social, and emotional well-being.

Counselor’s Role

The role of the school counselor is to promote student growth academically, socially, and emotionally.

Academics:

Assessment, data analysis, student advocacy, and post-secondary planning

Socially:

Character education, leadership, service opportunities, and civic responsibilities

Emotionally:
Individual and group counseling, guidance lessons, and crisis prevention and response


Philosophy Statement

I believe that all students have the ability to learn and grow to be productive citizens.  With the right support, assistance, and intervention, students have the ability to achieve their goals and be successful.  Cooperation between home, school, and community ensures that students have appropriate opportunities for growth and success.
