Note:  As of March 17, 2020, the requested waiver has been approved.

TDA has applied with the USDA for waivers that allow for school meal service during COVID-19 related closures that impact operations.  The waivers allow for non-congregate meal service through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and Seamless Summer option (SSO).

Newton ISD will begin distributing Grab-n-go type meals on Monday, March 23, 2020.

Selected School Sites:

Newton Elementary School

 Who may pick up meals:

Children up to age 18 may participate.

Meals must meet the USDA guidelines for federal reimbursement.  This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

Meal Service Time:

Option:

Meals will be offered Monday – Friday, from 11:00 am to 1:00 NOON, at the selected site.

Newton ISD is planning to combine meals and give two meals at the Newton Elem. School drive thru, and deliver meals served as Grab-n-go, home based delivery.  All students on a bus route will have their meals delivered to their designated bus stop.

Meal Preparation:

Grab-n-go type meals will be prepared and packaged by CN staff and/or other district staff.  Meals will include all required components.

Planned Menu:

Breakfast:

Cereal OR Pop-tart OR Breakfast Bar

            Dried Fruit OR Applesauce

            Fruit Juice

            White or Chocolate Milk

Apple Slices OR Whole Fresh Fruit

            Fruit Cup OR Applesauce

            Baby Carrots OR Vegetable Juice

            White OR Chocolate Milk

            Mayonnaise and mustard

Method of Meal Service:

Child Nutrition staff and/or other district staff will offer a curbside service.

  • Families should not enter the school building.
  • Signs will be posted for a specific location for meal pick up outside of the school building.
  • Parents will “drive through” a specified location at each campus.
  • Parents who park their vehicle should walk to the specified area to pick up meals.

Staffing:

Ideally, CN staff will be scheduled to work preparing and packaging meals.  This is due to the requirement of a Food Handler’s Certification for all food service workers in the state.  Should there not be enough CN staff willing and able to work, CN will reach out to other district staff for assistance.

  • All available CN staff will be assigned to the Newton Elementary Campus.
  • Hours will be assigned by the Director of Student Nutrition.

Meal Participation:

Because meal participation is an unknown, school feeding sites may be closed due to no or low participation.  This will be determined on an as needed basis.
